Plumbing Emergencies – what to do?

My good general advice is:

If you suffer a burst pipe, a leaky cistern or flooding of any kind, the first thing to is turn off the electricity supply at the consumer unit immediately.

In such a situation, a knowledge of your plumbing system is vital. Make sure you know the location of all the valves, particularly the main stop valve which allows you to turn off the water supply in an emergency.

Check valves every month to ensure that they open and close easily. Remember, never leave a valve completely open . This will make it more likely to size up, preventing you from closing it when you really need to.

Always close it by a quarter to a half-turn!

Fixing a burst pipe

You can use any method of joining pipes to replace a damage section , but plastic push-fits joinst are probably the easiest  , especially for the plumbing novice. Plastic push fit joinsts on copper pipes destroy the continuity of a plumbing earth bonding. This must be restored.

Keeping a few basic repair materials in your tool box and knowing what to do in an emergency will prevent most situations from getting out of hand.

Draughtproofing Sash Windows and Doors

The average house heat loses about 35% 0f it’s heat through the walls, 25% through the roof, 25% through draughty doors and windows, and 15% through the floor. Insulating all these areas will save you money on your fuel bills in the long term.

Simply fitting draught excluders to all gaps around the doors and windows will keep your home warmer and reduce the fuel bills. Self-adhesive foam strips of drought excluder are inexpensive, easy to fix in place and suitable for casement windows and interior doors. Make sure you don’t stretch the strips when fitting them as this might impairs their efficiency.

Draught proofing  sash windows might be a little bit complicated.

Fully draught-proofing your sash windows requires Sash Window Specialist or your local London Handyman who will remove the sashes. It’s a opportunity to repaint or refurbish your sash windows at the same time .  Your local Handyman in London can carry out any of the following :

• Carry out checks on weights
• Clean the glass to professional standards
• Refit sashes with new long-lasting nylon cords
• Re-balance sash window in box frame
• Plane meeting rails if necessary
• Fit new parting and staff beads
• Fit new 8.5mm brush pile draught excluders
• Remove all old window furniture and replace with brand new furniture

For doors, there is a variety of types of drought excluder to choose from, in different colours, and there are also complete sets for internal and external doors. The simplest is a self-adhesive foam strip -polyurethane foam for interior or vinyl-coated polyurethane, rubber or PVC foams for exterior doors. Sprung strip, in metal or plastic is pinned to the rebates of the doorframe. Make sure you attach the strip to the frame rather than to the door stop or it will be rubbed off when the door closes.
